Abbaye Saint-Pierre-de-Maillezais

The Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Maillezais is the substantial ruin of a former Benedictine monastery set in the heart of the Marais Poitevin, a vast wetland in the Vendée that was still flooded by the sea in the early Middle Ages. Founded in the 10th century on a raised limestone outcrop jutting above the marshes, it grew into a major religious center of western medieval France. Heavily damaged during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century and definitively abandoned after the French Revolution, the site retains striking Gothic vaulting fragments, a roofless nave, and portions of the cloister. Classified as a French historic monument, the grounds are freely accessible and frame views across the Marais Poitevin's network of canals and ancient alder trees.
