Abbaye de Mortemer

The Abbaye de Mortemer is a largely ruined Cistercian monastery founded in 1101, tucked into a forested valley of Normandy's Eure département, some 18 km north of Les Andelys. It stands as one of France's earliest Cistercian foundations, established during the order's formative period when austerity of stone and deliberate remoteness were core spiritual principles — qualities still legible in the spare Romanesque masonry that survives. The site is classified as a French historic monument and houses a small museum tracing monastic life. The abbey is also locally celebrated for its ghost legends, lending the wooded valley an atmosphere that sits somewhere between medieval history and folklore. Open daily 13:30–18:00.
