Abbaye de Hambye

Founded in 1145, Hambye Abbey is considered the most completely preserved medieval monastery in Normandy after Mont-Saint-Michel — a distinction it holds despite significant ruination following the French Revolution. The complex layers Romanesque foundations beneath Gothic nave arcades, where thick stone pillars still carry arches that open today onto open sky where a roof once stood. The monks were expelled in 1784, and the abbey was stripped and left to decay until the French state classified it as a protected historic monument in the 20th century. Now a paid-entry museum, visitors move through the cloister, chapter house, and church in near-total silence — a rare combination of standing medieval fabric and atmospheric open-air ruin.
