The Abbey of Notre-Dame du Bec, nestled in the Norman village of Le Bec-Hellouin, was one of medieval Europe's most influential Benedictine monasteries. Founded around 1001 by a knight named Herluin, it became an intellectual powerhouse in the 11th and 12th centuries — both Lanfranc and Anselm of Canterbury, two of England's most consequential medieval archbishops, spent formative years here. The French Revolution brought near-total destruction: the community was disbanded, and the buildings sold off and stripped. In 1948 the monastery was reborn when Olivetan Benedictine monks reclaimed the site, and monastic life has continued uninterrupted since. Today visitors encounter a largely intact Régence-style monastic complex, a tranquil cloister garden, and an atmosphere of contemplation that sets it apart from conventional heritage attractions.
