Abbaye Royale de l'Épau

The Abbaye Royale de l'Épau is a former Cistercian abbey founded in 1229 on the banks of the Huisne river, four kilometres east of Le Mans. It was established by Berenguela of Castile, Queen consort of England, whose effigy tomb remains inside the abbey church — an unusually direct royal connection for a provincial monastery. The architecture follows strict Cistercian principles: plain Gothic stonework, minimal ornament, and a remarkably well-preserved cloister that conveys the order's emphasis on austerity and contemplation. Classified as a historic monument by the French state, the abbey is open to visitors most of the year — 11am to 6pm in winter months, 10am to 7pm in summer, closed Tuesdays. Its riverside meadow setting and largely intact medieval fabric make it one of the most atmospheric monastic sites in the Sarthe département.
