Abraham a Sancta Clara Statue, Vienna

This monument commemorates Abraham a Sancta Clara (1644–1709), the most celebrated pulpit orator of Baroque Vienna and an Augustinian friar at the imperial court. As court preacher to Emperor Leopold I, he delivered sharp, satirical sermons during the plague epidemic of 1679 and the Ottoman siege of 1683 — performances that blended theological warning with biting popular humor. His florid, pun-laden prose style proved unexpectedly influential in German literature: Friedrich Schiller drew on him for a character in 'Wallenstein's Camp'. The statue stands as a quiet marker for a figure whose voice once shaped public life in Counter-Reformation Vienna.
