Vienna's MuseumsQuartier occupies the former imperial court stables commissioned by Emperor Charles VI and designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach from 1713 — a sweeping Baroque complex originally built to house the Habsburg riding horses. After decades of political debate, a major conversion completed in 2001 added two austere basalt-grey pavilions that sparked fierce architectural controversy but ultimately anchored one of the world's largest cultural precincts by area. The complex now clusters the Leopold Museum (home to the world's largest Egon Schiele collection), the mumok contemporary art museum, the Kunsthalle Wien, the Tanzquartier performance venue, and the ZOOM children's museum within a single walkable ensemble. The central courtyard — furnished with the MQ's signature colorful foam 'Enzis' loungers — functions as Vienna's informal summer living room, filling with locals long after the museum doors close.
