Ernst Happel Stadion

The Ernst Happel Stadion, set within Vienna's Prater parkland, is Austria's largest sports venue with a capacity of just over 50,000 and serves as the national stadium for international football. First opened in 1931 as the Praterstadion, it was rebuilt after wartime damage into its distinctive concrete bowl form — a piece of postwar modernism now listed as a protected monument. The stadium was renamed in 1992 after Viennese football coach Ernst Happel, who led Hamburger SV to the 1983 European Cup. Its most storied moment came in 1995 when it hosted the UEFA Champions League Final between Ajax and AC Milan. Beyond football, it doubles as Vienna's premier open-air concert venue: the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, and U2 have all played here to crowds exceeding 50,000. The U2 metro line stops directly at the stadium.
