Spittelberg

Spittelberg is Vienna's most intact Biedermeier neighborhood, a tightly woven grid of low-rise suburban houses, cobblestone lanes, and courtyards dating from the first half of the 19th century. Lying just outside the old city walls, the quarter was historically home to craftspeople and petty bourgeoisie, and under Empress Maria Theresa it gained a reputation for taverns and brothels that Josephine reforms later tried to suppress. By the mid-20th century it faced repeated demolition threats before civic activism and heritage protection preserved the ensemble. Today the ground floors of its ornate facades house galleries, design boutiques, wine cellars, and cocktail bars. The neighborhood draws its biggest crowds in December, when its Advent market — known for handcrafted goods rather than mass-produced trinkets — fills the narrow lanes.
