Acıgöl-Nevşehir Caldera

Extinct caldera with maars and lava domes between Acıgöl and Nevşehir

The Acıgöl-Nevşehir Caldera is an extinct volcano in Central Anatolia, Turkey. The elliptical caldera, roughly 7 by 8 kilometres, sits between the towns of Acıgöl and Nevşehir — a highway actually cuts straight through it. Inside the older, partially filled outer caldera, maars, cinder cones, lava domes, and basaltic lava flows formed over geological time. The landscape showcases the full variety of extinct volcanic features within a compact area. Today the wide, barren expanse attracts landscape photographers and geology enthusiasts alike, offering an unusual sight amid the Cappadocian steppe.
