Zelve Open-Air Museum

Zelve Open-Air Museum occupies a labyrinthine valley of volcanic tuff rock about five kilometres east of Göreme, preserving one of Cappadocia's largest troglodyte settlements. Until 1924, Christian and Muslim communities lived side by side in dwellings carved directly into the region's iconic fairy chimneys and cliff faces — an unusual example of shared religious coexistence written into the architecture itself. A landslide in 1952 forced the final evacuation, leaving the village as an intact ghost town. Rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes, wine presses, grain mills, and a small mosque survive across three interconnected valleys. Visitors today follow narrow footpaths through cave corridors, ducking into chapels whose painted walls — though worn by centuries of wind and moisture — still carry readable figures and geometric patterns.
