Uchisar Castle

Uçhisar Castle is not a conventional fortification but a massive volcanic tuff pinnacle at the heart of Cappadocia, honeycombed over millennia by Hittites, Byzantines, and later Ottoman inhabitants into a towering rock citadel. Rising some 60 metres above the surrounding valley floor, its labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, and passages served generations of locals as a refuge during times of invasion. A steep path climbs to the summit plateau, where on clear days the view sweeps across the Pigeon Valley, the fairy chimneys of Göreme, and — at higher visibility — the volcanic cone of Erciyes Dağı, making it one of the broadest panoramas in the region. The cave-riddled flanks of the rock remain partly inhabited today, with several chambers converted into boutique hotels, giving Uçhisar a rare quality as both living village and open-air monument.
