St. Barbara’s Chapel

St. Barbara's Chapel is a rock-cut Byzantine cave church carved into the volcanic tuff of Göreme Open-Air Museum in Cappadocia, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Likely dating to the 11th century, it is dedicated to St. Barbara of Nicomedia, one of the early venerated Christian martyrs. What makes it stand out among Göreme's painted churches is the near-total absence of figural scenes: instead, the walls are covered in bold geometric and symbolic patterns rendered in red ochre — crosses, lanceolate shapes, and cryptic animal-like figures whose precise meaning scholars have not conclusively determined. The relative austerity compared to the richly painted Dark Church nearby makes the symbolic language feel more conspicuous. The chapel is a short walk inside the museum grounds and takes roughly 10–15 minutes to visit.
