Analipsis Church

The Analipsis Church — also known as Peleme Church — is a rock-cut chapel carved directly into the volcanic tuff landscape on the outskirts of Göreme in Cappadocia. The region served as a heartland of Byzantine monastic life between roughly the 6th and 13th centuries, when communities excavated hundreds of churches and hermit cells into the area's distinctive fairy-chimney formations. The name 'Analipsis' refers to the Greek feast of the Ascension of Christ, suggesting a specific liturgical dedication by the Byzantine inhabitants of the valley. The church charges an entry fee and sits within the broader constellation of early Christian rock sanctuaries surrounding the Göreme Open-Air Museum, part of Cappadocia's UNESCO World Heritage zone.
