Adolf Gun

The Adolf Gun outside Harstad is a preserved 40.6 cm German naval cannon, originally engineered as the main armament for the H-class battleships laid down in 1939 but cancelled in 1941 before completion. Rather than scrap the already-manufactured barrels, the German Navy remounted them on coastal gun carriages to guard the strategically vital sea passage near Harstad during the occupation of Norway. At 406 mm calibre with a range exceeding 50 kilometres, it ranks among the heaviest coastal artillery pieces deployed during the war. Today the massive steel structure stands open-air, offering visitors a window into the industrial weapons development of the Third Reich alongside broad views across Vågsfjord.
