Akihabara

Akihabara is Tokyo's famous electric town — a postwar black market for radio and electronics components that evolved into the world's foremost hub for anime, manga, and gaming subculture. After World War II, surplus electronics dealers clustered around the train station; by the 1980s the district pivoted toward personal computers and gaming hardware, and by the 1990s otaku culture had fully taken over. Multi-story specialist stores stock everything from mint-condition retro consoles and rare vinyl figures to doujinshi comics and cosplay accessories. Maid cafés, pachinko parlors, and gacha-machine arcades line streets dominated by blazing LED storefronts. The Akihabara station hub, served by five rail lines including JR East and Tokyo Metro, makes the district one of the city's most accessible destinations.
