Alba Fucens

Alba Fucens is one of Italy's best-preserved Roman colonial cities, founded in 303 BC as a strategic garrison of the Roman Republic in the territory of the Aequi. Situated on a high plateau at 1,016 meters above sea level at the foot of Monte Velino, its altitude both served military surveillance purposes and shielded the ruins from later construction. The site preserves a legible Roman street grid alongside the theater, amphitheater, and stretches of the original city walls. Particularly striking is the early medieval church of San Pietro, built directly into the cella of an ancient Roman temple — layering two thousand years of religious history into a single structure. The remote setting near the hamlet of Albe gives the site an unusual quietness rarely found at archaeological ruins of this scale.
