Arycanda

Arycanda is one of Lycia's best-preserved ancient cities, set across dramatic terraced slopes in the Taurus Mountains of modern-day Antalya province. The city was continuously inhabited from at least the 6th century BC through the 11th century AD — a span of over 1,600 years. Its Roman-era theatre, cut into the mountainside and still remarkably intact, frames a sweeping view down into the valley below. Ancient sources describe Arycanda's citizens as notoriously profligate, repeatedly accumulating crippling debts and appealing to outside powers for relief — on one occasion petitioning a Persian satrap. Today the site draws archaeologists and independent travellers willing to hike across scattered remains of baths, a stoa, agora buildings, temples, and rock-cut tombs, with little of the tourist infrastructure that crowds better-known Lycian sites.
