Albanifriedhof

The Albani cemetery in Göttingen is a protected historic burial ground where prominent figures from 18th- and 19th-century science and culture found their final resting place. Its most celebrated grave belongs to Carl Friedrich Gauß (1777–1855), mathematician, astronomer and physicist, widely considered one of the greatest scientists in history. Gauß requested a modest burial; his tombstone features a 17-sided polygon, a nod to his early proof that a regular heptadecagon is constructible with compass and straightedge alone. The tree-lined grounds offer a quiet walk through bourgeois funerary culture and the intellectual history of one of Germany's foremost university towns.
