Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Cemetery

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Cemetery in the Charlottenburg district of Westend opened in 1896 and is one of the few Berlin burial grounds laid out entirely as an avenue-grid cemetery. Across roughly 3.7 hectares, lined lime avenues split the site into regular grave quarters, a late 19th-century concept that planned cemeteries on a street grid. The whole ensemble is a listed monument, with many hereditary tombs of the Westend bourgeoisie from the Wilhelmine era. Today residents and cemetery walkers stroll the old avenues, and occasional guided tours visit the protected grave monuments.
