Trans-Sahara Highway

The Trans-Sahara Highway (TAH 2) stretches approximately 4,500 kilometres from Algiers on the Mediterranean coast to Lagos on the Atlantic, crossing some of the most remote terrain on earth. The route traces an ancient caravan corridor used for centuries to move salt, gold, and other goods across the Sahara before modern road construction began in earnest during the post-independence 1960s. The southern Algerian stretch near In Guezzam is among its most isolated segments, passing through vast open desert with minimal services or settlements. Large sections are now paved, but shifting sands, missing links, and scarce infrastructure keep the full transit firmly in the realm of serious expedition travel.
