Pyramid of Amenemhet I

The Pyramid of Amenemhet I stands at el-Lischt, roughly 55 kilometers south of Cairo, built around 1989 BCE as the tomb of the founder of Egypt's 12th Dynasty and the Middle Kingdom. Amenemhet chose the site deliberately: the new royal necropolis adjoined his freshly established capital Itj-taui, positioned midway between Upper and Lower Egypt to tighten royal control over powerful regional governors. The pyramid's core incorporates recycled limestone blocks taken from older Old Kingdom monuments at Giza — a telling sign of the economic constraints and pragmatic ambitions of early Middle Kingdom rule. Today the structure is heavily eroded and largely off-limits to visitors, but the surrounding field of mastaba tombs belonging to senior court officials remains visible, offering a rare glimpse of a royal necropolis that history largely bypassed.
