Pyramid of Ahmose

Built between 1550 and 1525 BC within the temple complex of Abydos, the Pyramid of Ahmose holds a double distinction: it was both the last royal pyramid ever constructed in Egypt and the only one planned from the outset as a cenotaph — a symbolic empty tomb rather than an actual burial site. Pharaoh Ahmose I., founder of the 18th Dynasty, broke a funerary tradition spanning more than a thousand years; no successor would ever be entombed in a pyramid again. His actual burial place remains unknown to this day. The structure itself has been reduced to a low mound of rubble, its original form barely discernible. Despite its unassuming appearance, the site marks one of the sharpest turning points in pharaonic burial history.
