Arc de Caracalla

The Arc de Caracalla is a single-passageway Roman triumphal arch standing in the ancient city of Cuicul, now the archaeological site of Djémila in northeastern Algeria. Erected in 216 CE, it was commissioned to honor Emperor Caracalla alongside his mother Julia Domna and father Septimius Severus — a monument to the dynastic self-promotion typical of the Severan era. Djémila, founded around 96 CE as a Roman colonial settlement in the Algerian highlands, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 and is regarded as one of the best-preserved Roman urban ensembles in North Africa. Today the arch survives as a ruin amid the sprawling excavation field, its stone surface still bearing fragmentary inscriptions that shed light on imperial cult practices of the 3rd century.
