Άργιλος

Argilos was an ancient Greek port city in Macedonia, situated on the Strymonian Gulf roughly 2.8 km west of the Strymon River's mouth. Founded as an early colonial settlement, it controlled access to the trade routes of the fertile Strymon valley linking the Aegean coast to the Macedonian interior. Archaeological excavations have uncovered the remains of the acropolis and urban structures dating from roughly the 7th to 4th centuries BC, offering a rare window into a minor but strategically placed Aegean harbor town. The site today lies largely open to the elements near the modern village of Sykia, with ongoing excavations continuing to expose its ancient layout.
