Assos

Assos is an ancient terraced city perched on a basalt cliff on Turkey's Aegean coast, its modern village now called Behramkale. The 6th-century BC Doric Temple of Athena crowns the acropolis and is one of the rare surviving examples of the Doric order in Asia Minor, with sweeping views across to the island of Lesbos. Aristotle taught here between 348 and 345 BC, founding a philosophical school under the patronage of ruler Hermeias — a period that briefly made Assos a center of Greek intellectual life. The Hellenistic city walls, complete with monumental gate towers, rank among the best-preserved in the eastern Mediterranean. A small fishing harbor below the cliff serves fresh catch at waterside restaurants, giving the site a layered atmosphere of ancient ruins and living village.
