Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve

Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve protects roughly 326 hectares of old-growth coastal redwoods in Sonoma County, just north of Guerneville, and stands among the finest ancient forests in Northern California. The grove owes its survival to Colonel James Armstrong, a lumber entrepreneur who chose in the 1870s to preserve rather than log the land — an unusual act of conservation for that era. The reserve was formally protected in 1934 under the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Several of the Sequoia sempervirens specimens here exceed 1,000 years in age and tower above 65 meters, including the named Patriarch Tree. The park is open daily from 8 am to one hour after sunset; multiple trail loops wind through the forest floor, where the canopy and persistent coastal fog create an atmosphere of profound stillness.
