Auckland Castle

Auckland Castle in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, has served as the official residence of the Bishops of Durham since the 12th century, making it one of England's longest continuously occupied episcopal palaces. The structure traces its origins to Norman foundations around 1183, with extensive neo-Gothic remodelling shaping its current appearance. Its chapel — converted from a medieval great hall — and a remarkable series of Zurbarán paintings, purchased by Bishop Richard Trevor specifically for the castle in 1756, are its most celebrated features. Listed as a Grade I building, the castle reopened as a public cultural destination in 2019 following major restoration. Visitors today move through historic state rooms, the chapel, and the surrounding parkland.
