Belsay Hall

Belsay Hall is a severe and striking neoclassical manor house in rural Northumberland, around 14 miles northwest of Newcastle upon Tyne. Sir Charles Monck designed it from 1807 onward after a extended visit to Greece, modelling the facade directly on Athenian Doric temple architecture — making it one of the purest Greek Revival country houses in England. The estate also encompasses the ruins of the medieval Belsay Castle tower and a series of romantic quarry gardens, carved out of the very sandstone pit that supplied the hall's building material. Managed by English Heritage and listed Grade I, the site rewards slow exploration of its layered seven centuries of history.
