Belsay Castle

Belsay Castle is a 14th-century medieval tower house in Northumberland, roughly 20 miles northwest of Newcastle upon Tyne. For centuries it served as the fortified seat of the Middleton family, positioned in one of the most contested border zones between England and Scotland. The compact rectangular keep, constructed from precisely cut stone blocks, exemplifies the pele tower tradition developed across northern England as a defence against Scottish raids. The Middletons abandoned the castle in 1817 when they moved into the newly built neoclassical Belsay Hall nearby, leaving the medieval structure to fall into romantic ruin. Now managed by English Heritage and listed as a Grade I building and Scheduled Monument, the site draws around 66,000 visitors a year to explore both the castle remains and the surrounding landscaped gardens.
