Augusteum

The Augusteum on Elisabethstraße in Oldenburg is among the earliest purpose-built museum structures in northern Germany, completed in 1867 and named after Duke August I, whose personal art collection formed its founding stock. It now houses the Galerie Alte Meister of the Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte Oldenburg. The collection spans Dutch, Flemish, Italian, German, and French paintings from the 15th to 18th centuries, with particular strength in Dutch Golden Age works. The Historicist building's compact scale allows individual paintings room to breathe — a quieter counterpoint to the large encyclopedic museums of Hamburg or Bremen.
