Burg Blomendal

Burg Blomendal in Bremen's Blumenthal district is a medieval moated castle dating to 1354, making it the oldest surviving secular structure in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. Its name is the Low German spelling of Blumenthal, reflecting its position in the valley where the Blumenthaler Aue and Beckedorfer Beeke streams converge — a location chosen for the natural defensive advantage of surrounding water. The castle changed hands numerous times across the centuries and is today a protected cultural monument. Despite sitting near the elevated carriageway of the A270 motorway, the site retains a quietly atmospheric quality, with water channels and riparian meadows giving it an unexpectedly rural feel within the city.
