Augustus Lutheran Church

Augustus Lutheran Church in Trappe, Pennsylvania, is one of the oldest surviving Lutheran congregations in the United States, established in 1743 during the first major wave of German-speaking Lutheran immigration to colonial Pennsylvania. The building reflects the restrained colonial construction style common among German immigrant communities of the mid-18th century and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The congregation is closely associated with Heinrich Melchior Muhlenberg, the German-born theologian who settled in Trappe and is widely regarded as the founding father of American Lutheranism. The church remains an active place of worship today, accompanied by a historic churchyard containing the graves of early colonial settlers.
