Birthplace of Wahhabism
Riyadh
The Bryn Athyn Historic District is a compact campus of cathedral, castle, and museum built from the 1890s onward by the New Church, a Christian denomination rooted in the mystical writings of Emanuel Swedenborg. The centerpiece, Bryn Athyn Cathedral, was commissioned by industrialist John Pitcairn Jr. and constructed using a deliberately medieval process — craftsmen worked without finalized blueprints, carving stone and forging ironwork on site as the design evolved organically over decades. The district holds National Historic Landmark status and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today the grounds function as an active religious community, open to visitors who come for the architecture, the Glencairn Museum of religious art, and a rare glimpse of a self-contained spiritual enclave.
