Bab Rouah

Bab Rouah — Arabic for "Gate of the Winds" — is one of the most significant surviving Almohad city gates in Rabat, constructed in the 12th century as part of the city's monumental defensive walls. The gate is distinguished by its elaborately carved stone relief decoration: horseshoe arches framed by interlacing arabesques and geometric patterns characteristic of Almohad craftsmanship at its height. In 2012 it was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Rabat, Modern Capital and Historic City." The gate's interior chambers are periodically used as an exhibition space for contemporary Moroccan art, layering modern creative work onto the medieval structure.
