Castle of Castellar de la Frontera

Castillo de Castellar is a Moorish fortress in the Andalusian hinterland north of Algeciras, protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural under Spain's highest heritage designation. Its origins trace back to the 7th century, and by 800 AD the Moors were using the site as a strategic stronghold during their conquest of the Iberian Peninsula via Gibraltar. The preserved inner core — known as the Old Castle — retains characteristic early Islamic masonry from the first wave of Moorish settlement in Andalusia. Perched on a wooded ridge, the castle commands sweeping views across the Strait of Gibraltar toward the North African coast, a position that explained its military value for centuries. Today the largely abandoned site is accessible via hiking trails and carries a quietly remote, time-worn atmosphere.
