Castle of Jimena de la Frontera

The Castillo de Jimena de la Frontera is a ruined Moorish hilltop fortress above the whitewashed Andalusian town of Jimena de la Frontera in the province of Cádiz. The fortification dates to the medieval Arab occupation of southern Iberia and served as a key frontier post during the Reconquista — the town's suffix 'de la Frontera' is a direct reference to its position on the shifting border between Christian and Moorish territories. Designated a Bien de Interés Cultural since 1931, it holds Spain's highest protection status for immovable heritage. The accessible ruins reward the climb with sweeping views across the cork-oak hills of the Los Alcornocales natural park and, on clear days, to the Rock of Gibraltar.
