Bagras

Baghras is a ruined medieval fortress perched on a rocky spur above the plain of Antakya in Turkey's Hatay province. For centuries it served as the key garrison controlling the northern gateway into Syria — whoever held this pass held the main road between Anatolia and the Crusader states. During the 12th and 13th centuries it changed hands repeatedly among the Principality of Antioch, the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, and the Knights Templar, making it a recurring flashpoint in Crusade-era chronicles. Byzantine masonry and later Ottoman interventions are layered throughout the largely unexcavated ruins. The climb rewards visitors with an open panorama across the Orontes valley and the Amanus mountain range.
