Kayseri Castle

Kayseri Castle stands at the center of this central Anatolian city and is among the most continuously reworked fortresses in the region. It first appears on coins minted during the reign of Gordian III between 238 and 244 AD, but its walls were subsequently rebuilt and expanded by Romans, Byzantines, Danishmends, Seljuqs, Dulqadirs, Karamanids, and Ottomans — each era leaving distinct traces in the dark basalt stonework. The structure today consists of an inner and outer fortification ring with 18 towers in total. What makes the site particularly striking is its immediacy: the two-millennia-old battlements rise directly out of the city's busy bazaar quarter, making the layered history of Anatolian rule tangible at street level.
