Narvik station

Narvik station sits at kilometre 3.7 of the Ofotbahn, the Norwegian leg of the iron-ore railway linking Luleå on the Swedish coast to the ice-free Atlantic harbour at Narvik. The line opened in 1902 specifically because the port of Luleå freezes in winter, making Narvik the only year-round export route for the massive iron-ore deposits around Kiruna and Gällivare — the city of Narvik itself was founded solely to serve this purpose. The station building, now a listed heritage monument, dates from that founding era and remains the functional terminus for passenger services. The rail journey through fjords and Arctic mountain scenery is widely regarded as one of the most scenic train routes in Scandinavia.
