Helmstedt railway station
Railway History
Oebisfelde station, a modest Gründerzeit-era building in Sachsen-Anhalt, served for four decades as one of the GDR's principal border crossing points on the rail corridor between Hanover and Magdeburg. From 1949 to 1990, trains were halted here for thorough checks: passengers disembarked, carriages were searched for would-be escapees, and border guards controlled all movement through what was once a junction of up to seven lines. The political apparatus that made this small station notorious has largely vanished, but the building itself stands as a quiet remnant of the inner-German divide.
