Otaru Station

Otaru Station is the main rail terminus of the port city of Otaru on Hokkaido, opened in 1903 during the Meiji era when railway expansion across the island was a national priority. At its peak, Otaru was one of Hokkaido's most important harbors for coal and herring, and the rail line formed the backbone of regional freight transport. Today the station functions primarily as a gateway for day-trippers from Sapporo — roughly 40 minutes by train — and sits within walking distance of the city's well-preserved canal district.
