Ballyhannon Castle

Ballyhannon Castle is a late 15th-century tower house near the village of Quin in County Clare, western Ireland. Structures of this type — compact fortified residences built by local Gaelic clans and Anglo-Norman lords — proliferated across Ireland between the 14th and 17th centuries, with County Clare alone once counting hundreds of examples. Ballyhannon is noted for surviving almost entirely intact, earning it National Monument status. The site sits quietly in flat pastoral countryside without tourist infrastructure, making it a rare, unmediated encounter with late medieval Irish fortification.
