Ballymoon Castle

Ballymoon Castle is a medieval ruin located about three kilometres east of Muine Bheag in County Carlow — geographically closer to Carlow than to Kilkenny. Its most striking feature is its unusually large, near-square enclosure of granite masonry, yet no builder or construction date has ever been firmly established. Historians have suggested the Bigod Earls of Norfolk raised the walls in the late 13th century, with some speculating it was abandoned before completion.
