Medieval Civic Museum

The Museo Civico Medievale occupies a medieval palazzo in central Bologna and holds one of northern Italy's foremost collections of medieval civic art. Its holdings span tomb monuments, ivory carvings, bronze castings, arms, and communal insignia from the era of Bologna's free city-commune — roughly the 12th through 15th centuries. Particularly striking are the life-sized funerary statues of professors from the University of Bologna, the oldest university in Europe, which illuminate the city's deep ties between civic power and scholastic prestige. Opened in 1985, the museum offers a carefully curated counterpart to the medieval streetscape visible outside its doors.
