Kronberg Castle

Kronberg Castle has dominated the town of the same name on the southern slope of the Taunus since the 12th century and is among the best-preserved castle complexes in the Rhine-Main region. It consists of three phases: the High Medieval upper bailey with its striking Hohenstaufen-era keep, the late medieval chapel, and the early modern middle bailey with a palace character. The Kronberg Knights, an influential Imperial Knight family, crushed a Frankfurt urban army in front of these walls in 1389. With the family's extinction in 1704 the castle passed to Electoral Mainz and lost its function. Today stairs climb the keep to a viewing platform overlooking Kronberg, the Taunus foothills, and the Frankfurt skyline. The castle museum tells the story of the Kronberg Knights.
