Banbhore

Banbhore is an extensive ruin site in Pakistan's Sindh province, situated on the edge of Gharo Creek roughly 60 kilometres southeast of Karachi. Archaeologists identify it with Daibul, the port where the Arab general Muhammad bin Qasim landed in 711 CE and launched the Islamic conquest of the Indian subcontinent — making it one of the most consequential landing points in South Asian history. Excavations have uncovered the remains of an early 8th-century mosque, among the oldest on the subcontinent, alongside city walls, harbour structures, and pre-Islamic strata reaching back to Scythian and Parthian periods. The site currently sits on UNESCO's Tentative World Heritage List. A small on-site museum displays ceramics and coins found during digs, while the open ruin field itself remains largely unrestored, offering visitors an unfiltered encounter with a once-thriving medieval port city.
