Bantry House

Bantry House is a Georgian manor dating to around 1710, set on a hillside above Bantry Bay in County Cork with some of the most sweeping coastal views on Ireland's southwest coast. The house passed to the White family — later Earls of Bantry — who filled it over generations with an eclectic collection of European furniture, Flemish tapestries, and decorative arts gathered on Grand Tour travels across the continent. The estate carries a notable historical footnote: in 1796 a French fleet of some 43 ships under General Hoche anchored in the bay below in an attempt to invade British-held Ireland, but storms prevented a landing — a pivotal near-miss in Irish history. Open to visitors for an admission fee, the house retains its furnished period rooms, and the terraced Italianate gardens descending toward the bay are a particular draw.
