Ballynacarriga Castle

Ballynacarriga Castle is a 16th-century tower house in rural County Cork, situated roughly nine kilometres east of Dunmanway and protected as Irish National Monument No. 425. Tower houses of this type were the fortified residences of Gaelic and Anglo-Irish landed families between the 14th and 17th centuries — compact, multi-storey keeps that combined defensive function with a show of local power. The castle's remote setting in the soft hill country of west Cork gives it a quiet, unhurried character far removed from more visited Irish heritage sites.
