Ballymalis Castle

Ballymalis Castle is the ruin of a medieval tower house on the northern bank of the River Laune in County Kerry, about 4.3 km northwest of the village of Beaufort. Tower houses of this type were built across Ireland between roughly the 15th and 17th centuries as fortified residences for local lords — compact, multi-storey keeps that combined domestic function with military defence. The ruin sits near the confluence of the Gaddagh river and is protected as a National Monument under the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. It remains a raw, undeveloped site with no visitor infrastructure, set against open pasture with the Ring of Kerry passing just to the north — appealing to those who prefer their ruins unmediated.
